A Note from Pastor Jay
Hello Saints of St. Mark!
A PRAYER FOR LENT. By Johann Gerhard (from Johann Gerhard, Meditations on Divine Mercy. Translated by Matthew C. Harrison. St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 2003.)
O JESUS CHRIST, Son of the living God, in Your Word You exclaim: “If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me” (Matthew 16:24). I beg You through Your most holy death and crucifixion to perfect in me the denial of self that You require. I know it is easier to forsake all creation than to deny self. I humbly beg You to accomplish in me that which of myself I do not know how to achieve. May the desires of my own will be stilled within me so I am able to hear Your divine admonition. May the weed of self-love be rooted out of my heart so the sweetest plants of divine love may grow within me. May I die totally to myself and my lusts so I may live totally for You and Your will. My will is changeable and erratic, fickle and unstable. Grant that I subject my will to Yours and that I cling unflinchingly to You, the only changeless and continuous good. Divine power increases in us only when natural powers fail. Only when our own will has been put to death are our works done in God (John 3:21). Only when we are brought to nothing and disappear do we truly exist in and live in God (Acts 17:28). O true Life, put to death my will so I may begin truly to live in You. Anything in us that commends us to God and makes us pleasing to Him must descend from God Himself. Thus everything good must be ascribed to God alone, and that which is His must be left to Him.Whatever shines and gleams in us proceeds from God, who is the eternal and unchangeable light that lightens the inborn darkness of our minds. Thus may our light so shine before people, not that we are glorified but that God is glorified (Matthew 5:16). Kindle in my heart, O Christ, the true light, the light of true understanding. Work in my heart, O Christ, the true glory of the Father, the denial of my own honor and glory. It is better for me to be nothing in You and receive Your everything than to be something in and of myself and have nothing. Where I am not, there I am happier. My weakness longs to be strengthened by Your might. My nothingness reaches for Your strength. May Your holy will be done on the earth of my flesh so Your heavenly kingdom may come in my soul(Matthew 6:10). Put to death in me the love and honor of self so the coming of Your kingdom may not be hindered. If our consummate good is that we love God, then absolute evil must be for us to love ourselves. If the free giving of one’s self is a stipulation of true good, self-love is a great evil because it selfishly arrogates that which is its own and which belongs to others. If all glory is owed to God alone, then honoring one’s self is the greatest theft. Such an act ascribes to itself things that really belong to another. Extinguish my habitual desire for self-love and honor, O Christ, the one who is blessed for eternity. AMEN.
May God bless you as you continue following Jesus and returning to the Lord your God this Lenten season.
– Pastor Jay

A member of St. Mark and our High School youth ministry, Deanna Ringler, is collecting non-perishable foods for a school service project. Canned goods and some boxed foods are the best. She is asking if you would consider helping her in this service effort. The Open Door Mission is a ministry that St. Mark has supported for many years, and her hope is to continue that effort with her own project through school and your help. Deanna will be in the Gathering Space to answer questions and receive any donations you are gracious enough to provide starting this weekend, and ending March 8th. All of the items will be donated to Open Door Mission.Thank you for your support. We are proud to help our youth be involved serving their neighbors! |

Theme: Peter Walking on WaterHere are pictures from this week’s Sunday school. We had 8 kids and we were learning about Peter walking on the water in Matthew 14. We’re in week 4 of a six week theme series connecting some favorite cereals with Biblical teaching points. The flavors of apples and cinnamon in Apple Jacks come together to make something great, but Jesus in us is a life-saving pairing. As we grow in our relationship with Him our faith is strengthened and He makes us far more than we could ever be on our own. Today the students made snacks using the flavors of cinnamon and apples and it also shows the events of today’s story as Peter got out of the boat and began walking to Jesus on the water. When Peter kept focused on Jesus incredible things were possible and Peter got to spend a few moments walking on water with the Lord. The kids really enjoyed making and eating these snacks while using the ingredients to show what was happening in the Bible story. Since Jesus makes us more than we could ever be on our own, we also played a game that used teamwork. Students had to come together as a team to move a hoop hanging from strings to ring a series of cones in order get the words to complete our unit’s theme Bible verse – Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him. Psalm 34:8 Remember if you see a kid from Sunday School walking around with their craft ask them about it. It gives them an opportunity to share God’s Love. If you would like to volunteer in this fun ministry please contact Kelly in the Church Office at kthompson@stmarkomaha.org or call 402-913-2258. |

Women’s Bible StudyJoin Us for Women’s Bible Study. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall every other Thursday at 6:30 pm. Enough For Now: Unpacking God’s SufficiencyThe concept of ‘having enough’ is one that is not often experienced. If I only had more money … more success … more time … then I would be fulfilled. Yet, even when more is attained, it rarely satisfies. An eight-lesson Women’s Bible Study, Enough For Now, explores the idea of ‘enough’ through the study of Scripture – specifically the parable of the rich fool, personal stories and practical experiences. Over the course of the eight lessons, women will discover how to escape the insatiable quest for more by finding their ‘enough’ in God. About the Author There are are some books available to our group that were given to us. Please let Jolene or Lorrie know if you need a book. Books will be available for approximately $14.95 after we deplete the supply of available books. Please let Jolene Scalzo or Lorrie Wacker know if you would like to join us. |

Verse of the Week: Quote of the Week: Fun Fact of the Week: |
This Week: Our current study is called “Echo”, led by Pastor and author Jonathon Fisk. Christianity is not the ability to memorize or recite from books of Scripture or doctrine. It is not magic. It is not social club, counseling group, or self-help support group. It does not promise that you will be healthy, wealthy, wise, or even happy. Christianity is a truth—a truth first heard at the beginning of time that has echoed to this present age. A truth so profound that no man can master it, yet even a child can learn it. “As Iron Sharpens Iron, Men Sharpen Men!” St. Mark Band of Brothers: Raising up men to be warriors and disciples for Christ… for their families… as single men… in their workplaces… and in their community! All men and high school aged boys are welcome to join the St. Mark Band of Brothers on Saturday Mornings at 9 am in the St. Mark Youth Room. Join us as we work to center our lives around God’s Word to be the man God is calling us to be. To request the Band of Brothers weekly updates and study guides contact Jack Swanda at jswanda@cox.net. |
