“Skywriting”
Have you ever noticed how different spaces can affect your mood? A warm and welcoming feeling as you enter a living room, or maybe a feeling of fear and trepidation in the shadows and sounds of an alleyway. Real estate agents know how important “staging” a room is when attempting to sell a home. Prospective buyers must feel the room and experience what it would be like to live there; the furniture, smells, colors, pictures, etc. Much like a physical space, we all communicate with more than words. Our body posture, mannerisms, gestures, eye movement, tone and voice inflection are all powerful communicators. Psalm 19 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard.”
In the public square today, science is the new religion of the masses. I heard it said this past week, “Any questions we can’t answer now about life and the universe science will answer soon enough.” It seems faith is needed in science as well! Science has to have faith that the universe is knowable, and faith in many things science can’t physically see or measure. Even atheism’s leading evangelist, scientist Richard Dawkins, has gone on record and admits that science cannot actually disprove the existence of God. For all the good that science has afforded us (medicine, disaster warnings, etc.), science will never be able to prove or disprove the existence of God. Using science as the reason why you do or do not believe in God is at best a false positive. When it comes to the biggest questions in life, the questions that really matter, science falls painfully silent to answer. Why is there anything at all? What purpose am I here for? What is right and wrong? A knowable universe and the human mind that perceives it are both a gift from God. Science and faith are not incompatible.
By definition, a Creator is necessarily outside and above and beyond His creation. This is why science will never prove nor disprove God. The Creator is always bigger than the creation. Though God’s creation has His fingerprints all over it, creation only testifies to God. To know God, He must reveal Himself to you personally. The Good News is that God has revealed Himself, personally, in Jesus Christ. “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.” – Hebrews 1:1-3
Christ has promised to reveal Himself to you personally if in fact you are truly seeking Him. His Word, The Bible, is where He has promised to meet with us and reveal Himself to us. A word we can understand. A Word that is “the power of salvation to everyone who believes.” – Romans 1:16.
