Elementary Teacher

Position: Full-Time Called or Contracted

Staff Supervisor:       School Principal/Head Teacher

Position Summary:   A Teacher at St. Mark Lutheran School will carry out the Great Commission of Jesus Christ and promote the mission of “Connecting People to Jesus” by ministering the Gospel to students and their families through providing an excellent education that is from, in, and for the glory of God in Christ Jesus and that develops the whole person in mind, body, and spirit.

Oversight & Accountability: Utilizing a policy-based governance model, the Parish Leadership Council (PLC) entrusts overall leadership of the St. Mark ministry to the Senior Pastor.  He, in turn, implements the ministries through the staff of which a Teacher is a member.  A Teacher of St. Mark Lutheran School works and functions as an extension of the Pastoral teaching office and is therefore ultimately accountable to the leadership of the Senior Pastor for implementing the policies of St. Mark Lutheran Church and School in their teaching, supervision, and leadership of the student teachers, aides, volunteers, and students entrusted to them.  The Principal/Head Teacher of St. Mark Lutheran School assists and works with the Senior Pastor in carrying out the School ministry entrusted to him as a primary focus of the ministry of St. Mark Lutheran Church. 

Essential Responsibilities: Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.

  1. Structures all learning experiences that teach/lead students into a growing relationship with Christ and assists students to achieve their potential.
  1. Set an example of Christian and professional ethics at all times.
  2. Abide by the procedures outlined in the staff handbook and St. Mark personnel policies.
  3. Cooperate and support the Senior Pastor, Principal, and administration in implementing all policies, procedures, and directives governing the operation of the School.
  4. Attend and participate in scheduled devotional, in-service, retreats, open house, parent conferences, committee, faculty, and Parent-Teacher Fellowship meetings.
  5. Keep students, parents, and the administration adequately informed of progress or deficiencies and give sufficient notice of failure.
  6. Maintain a high level of confidentiality on private and personal matters.
  7. Recognize the need for good public relations. Represent the School in a favorable and professional manner to the School’s constituency and the general public.
  8. Develop and maintain rapport with students, parents, and staff by treating others with friendliness, dignity, and consideration.
  9. Seek the counsel of the administrator, colleagues, and parents while maintaining a teachable attitude.
  10. Teach classes as assigned following prescribed scope and sequence as scheduled by the supervisor.
  11. Keep proper discipline according to disciplinary policies in the classroom and on the School premises for a good learning environment.
  12. Maintain a clean, attractive, well-ordered classroom.
  13. Plan broadly through the use of semester and quarterly plans and objectives, and more currently through the use of a lesson plan book or similar medium.
  14. Utilize valid teaching techniques to achieve curriculum goals within the framework of the School’s philosophy and missional framework.
  15. Plan through approved channels the balanced classroom use of field trips, guest speakers, and other media.
  16. Use homework effectively for drill, review, enrichment, or project work.
  17. Maintain regular and accurate attendance and grade records to meet the demands for a comprehensive knowledge of each student’s progress.

Supplemental Functions

  1. Supervise extra-curricular activities, organizations, and outings as assigned.
  1. Utilize educational opportunities and evaluation processes for professional growth.
  2. Provide input and constructive recommendations for administrative and managerial functions in the School.
  3. Support the broader program of the School by attending extra-curricular activities when possible.
  4. Perform any other duties, which may be assigned by the administration.

  10. Uses correct language. Is tactful, courteous, and is an effective listener.
  11. Maintains prompt hours; notifies the Principal and School in event of illness.

Qualifications

  1. Spiritually mature Christian active in the worship life of his/her church.
  2. Demonstrates instructional excellence and effective classroom management.
  3. Evidences a lifestyle that reflects a dynamic relationship with Christ.
  4. Holds a valid teacher’s certificate and any additional background work requested by administration.
  5. Educational Preparation
    1. Professionally trained educator, preferably Master’s Degree, or BA in Early Childhood Development, Elementary Education, or equivalent.
    2. Has and will maintain Teaching Certification.
  6. Church membership and attendance
    1. Of first preference: is or will become an active member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.
    2. Of second preference: is or will become a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church.
    3. Of third preference: is an active member of another Christian church or denomination.
  7. LCMS qualification by Lutheran Teacher Diploma or Colloquy:
    1. Of first preference: has this qualification.
    2. Of second preference: is working toward or will complete in a reasonable period of time the LCMS teacher colloquy.

Terms of Employment: 12-month called or contracted, full-time, salaried, and exempt employee as per the policies detailed in the St. Mark Lutheran Church Personnel Manual.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated as per procedures outlined in the Personnel Manual of St. Mark Lutheran Church.
