Elementary Paraprofessional

Staff Supervisor: Classroom teachers as assigned

Position Summary: A Paraprofessional at St. Mark Lutheran School will carry out the Great Commission of Jesus Christ and promote the mission of “Connecting People to Jesus” by ministering the Gospel to students and their families through their assisting classroom teachers to provide an excellent education that is from, in, and for the glory of God in Christ Jesus and that develops the whole person in mind, body, and spirit.

Oversight & Accountability: Utilizing a policy-based governance model, the Parish Leadership Council (PLC) entrusts the overall leadership of the St. Mark ministry to the Senior Pastor.  He, in turn, implements the ministries through the staff of which a Paraprofessional is a member.  A Paraprofessional of St. Mark Lutheran School works and functions as an extension of the Pastoral teaching office and is, therefore, ultimately accountable to the leadership of the Senior Pastor for implementing the policies of St. Mark Lutheran Church and School in their duties.  The Principal/Head Teacher of St. Mark Lutheran School assists and works with the Senior Pastor in carrying out the School ministry entrusted to him as a primary focus of the ministry of St. Mark Lutheran Church. 

Description: The Paraprofessional will assist certificated teacher(s) in instructing students placed in regular classrooms and programs, monitor and report student progress in behavior and performance, and perform clerical and instructional support duties.

Essential Responsibilities: Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.

  1. Assist the teacher in providing instructional activities to individual students or groups to promote student learning.
  2. Reinforce core curriculum instruction and confer with teacher(s) concerning programs and materials to meet the individual needs of students.
  3. Assist the teacher with student files and records in accordance with school policies to help ensure required documentation and student privacy.
  4. Prepare, create, or modify instructional materials.
  5. Assist the teacher in setting up schedules and distributing and collecting materials, information, and announcements.
  6. Monitor students, classroom, and playground activities to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  7. Assist in maintaining a clean and orderly learning environment.
  8. Supervise students on the playground/athletic courts and in the cafeteria.
  9. Assist the teacher in administering and proctoring tests according to established guidelines.
  10. Participate in meetings, conferences, and in-service training programs to receive and share updated information and improve skills and knowledge.
  11. Work with children having difficulty with the level of subject learning material.
  12. Accompanying teachers and students on field trips, community-based training, travel, and vocational training.
  13. Other related work as required.

  11. Maintains prompt hours; notifies the Principal and School in event of illness.

Qualifications

  1. Spiritually mature Christian active in the worship life of his/her church.
  2. Demonstrates instructional excellence and effective classroom management.
  3. Evidences a lifestyle that reflects a dynamic relationship with Christ.
  4. Church membership and attendance
    1. Of first preference: is or will become an active member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.
    2. Of second preference: is or will become a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church.
    3. Of third preference: is an active member of another Christian church or denomination.

Terms of Employment: 10-month contract or year-round as a part-time or full-time, non-exempt employee as per the policies detailed in the St. Mark Lutheran Church Personnel Manual.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated as per procedures outlined in the Personnel Manual of St. Mark Lutheran Church.

Compensation: Starting at $14/hour depending on experience.  Benefits are available for both full-time and part-time positions.
