DAILY DEVOTIONAL – October 14, 2020

“Tomor…”

Prayer:  Almighty God, we have hope and meaning and purpose in this life only because of Your great love for us in Jesus.  By Your Spirit, Lord, help us to make the most out of the short time we have in this life by faithfully following Your Son, believing in Him and living for Your glory.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.

Scripture: Luke 12:16-21

And Jesus told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ 21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

Devotional – “Tomor…”

What if you in fact did know that there wasn’t going to be a tomorrow.  What if, through whatever means, you knew for certain the day and time you were going to die.  Would you live life differently?  How would you live differently?  Perhaps more importantly, why would you live differently?  What is it about the hope of tomorrow, the hope of life, that makes us live differently than if we knew tomorrow would never come?

What we believe and why we believe it, matters.  It matters more than anything else because what we believe has a direct and proportionate impact on how we live our lives and whether or not we find the fulfillment and meaning we are all looking for in life.  Believing that our life is just the product of chance and that the meaning of life is just about the survival of the fittest, necessarily means that there is no meaning or purpose to life.  If there is no meaning or purpose to life then there is no hope for tomorrow other than to do whatever you can to try and squeeze some kind of enjoyment out of life while you survive for another 24 hours.  If you do not believe that we were created from love and for love, from the love of God and in order to love God, then tomorrow is meaningless and you might as well live like it doesn’t exist.

But there is the hope of not only tomorrow but an eternity of tomorrows by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ.  Though we all die and though there will be an end to our tomorrows on this earth, through faith in Christ we live forever with Him in the new heavens and new earth – and that should absolutely change how we live today.  Colossians 3:1-4 says, “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”

Today is the day of salvation, and though we have the sure hope of eternity by faith in Christ’s death and resurrection, tomorrow is guaranteed to no one.  As Scripture says in Hebrews 9:27-28, “27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.”

Thanks for joining me for another daily devotional in God’s Word, and remember, that God has forgiven yesterday, is with you today and has already taken care of tomorrow.  Amen.
