Prayer: Jesus, You are enough, more than enough for us.   Enough for today and for all eternity.  Amen.

Scripture: Zephaniah 3:17

“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.”

Devotional – “Enough.”

The prophet Zephaniah is one of the minor prophets.  When theologians talk about “major and minor” prophets, they are not talking about importance of the prophet, but rather about the amount of material they wrote.  Neither should we think that just because a the prophet Zephaniah only wrote 3 chapters, while the major prophet Isaiah wrote 66 chapters, that Zephaniah is any less important in his content.  In fact, Zephaniah talks specifically more about Christ than most of the other major prophets.

Zephaniah was a prophet that warned Israel about the captivity that was coming; a captivity under the ruthless empire of Babylon, and a captivity that God would allow to happen in order to discipline Israel in love because of their idolatry and faithlessness.  However, Zephaniah proclaims just as loudly to God’s people, as hard as it may be to believe, God was disciplining His people in love; much like a loving earthly father does his children.  Zephaniah assures them that though much will be taken away from them, they will still have all they need, they will still have enough because the Lord their God will never leave or forsake them even in His loving discipline.  The faithful children of God would always have enough, even with everything taken from them in captivity, because God would be with them, in their midst, even in the worst of times.  Zephaniah says in 3:17:

“The Lord your God is in your midst,

a mighty one who will save;

he will rejoice over you by his love;

he will exalt over you with loud singing.”

As I was reading that today, I thought it was a very timely message for you and I as well.  Much has changed very quickly.  Much has been taken away, and yet, we have and will always have more than enough because the Christ that Zephaniah promised would come as Israel’s Deliverer, has come!  Jesus has come, and because of His great sacrifice and resurrection, God has come near, He is in our midst, and He is enough.

There is a wonderful song by Christian recording artist Elias Dummer entitled “Jesus, You Are Enough.”  They words and the tune are beautiful and I couldn’t get that song out of my head while reading and thinking about Zephaniah’s words.  To close this devotion today, I would like to share that song with you.  I have linked to a YouTube version of the song below, and included the lyrics for you.  As my favorite line of the chorus says, “With nothing, I still have everything.  Jesus, You are enough for me.”

Listen to the song and enjoy the full satisfaction of Christ my friends.  Thanks for joining me for a time of devotion and remember that God has forgiven yesterday, is with you today, and has already taken care of tomorrow.  Amen.

Jesus, You Are Enough (Elias Dummer) – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIjkHkUmluo

I am not what I make, I am who You have made me to be

I am not what I’ve done, I am loved unconditionally

I am not loved by the measure of love that I bring

I am not who I know, I am known by the King of all Kings

Jesus, You are enough

Jesus, You are enough for me

With nothing, I still have everything

Jesus, You are enough for me

You are maker, made visible, holding the world in your hands

You are patient and merciful, giver of grace without end

Satisfied simply by being who you’ve always been

You are infinite love and You prove it again and again

Jesus, You are enough

Jesus, You are enough for me

With nothing, I still have everything

Jesus, You are enough for me

In You I am created

In You I am sustained

With You I’m resurrected

You overcame the grave

With you I stand in victory

Now what else could I need

With You I want for nothing

Jesus, my everything

Jesus, You are enough

Jesus, You are enough for me

With nothing, I still have everything

Jesus, You are enough for me
